Drones open up creative possibilities for audiovisual production. Bringing them into a shoot successfully takes planning, technical knowledge and attention to the applicable rules. These seven points help you prepare the aerial work alongside the rest of the production.
1. Plan the flight and the shoot
Define the shots you need, the locations and the light and weather conditions. Tools such as Google Earth and flight-planning applications can help you assess routes and identify possible obstacles before the location visit.
2. Check the rules and permissions
Drone rules vary between countries. Check the requirements for your location, arrange permissions where needed and account for restricted airspace. In Spain, AESA is the national aviation safety authority. For our own flights in Murcia, Dronpaco reviews restrictions and handles the coordination or permission that applies. Read about flight permits and coordination.
3. Choose suitable equipment
The aircraft depends on the production. Film and advertising may require a DJI Inspire 3 or a Freefly Alta X camera package; lighter productions may suit a smaller aircraft such as the DJI Air 3.
4. Work with an experienced pilot
If you do not have drone-piloting experience, work with a qualified operator. Their role includes precise flight control, planning a safe operation and helping the production achieve its intended shots.
5. Account for weather and light
Wind, rain and light affect the flight and the image. Check the forecast and choose an appropriate filming window. The golden hour around sunrise or sunset can be useful when it suits the look of the production.
6. Plan cinematic camera movement
Smooth, deliberate movement helps aerial shots work within a sequence. An orbit around a subject or a tracking shot following movement can add a different perspective to the production.
7. Put safety first
Plan appropriate separation from people and structures, carry spare batteries and check the aircraft systems before take-off.

Bringing it together
Integrating drones into a shoot takes preparation, suitable equipment and the right knowledge. For professional aerial filming, Dronpaco can work alongside your production team.
